How often should I cut my hair?

Short, structured cuts every four to six weeks. Mid-lengths every eight to ten. Long hair every ten to twelve, to keep the ends. Curly and coily hair tolerates longer gaps because the shape is more forgiving.

Does cutting make hair grow faster?

No. Growth happens in the follicle, and scissors do not reach it. What cutting does is remove broken ends — without it, breakage travels up the strand and length stalls. It does not speed growth, but it stops you losing it.

Should I bring a reference photo?

Do — but bring two or three, and be open to adapting. The photo shows what appeals to you; what will suit you depends on your face and your hair, not on the ones in the photo.

The name of a cut is a shorthand, not a recipe. Two cuts called “long bob” can be entirely different depending on the line, the graduation and the texture of the person wearing it. This guide explains what sits behind each name — so you arrive knowing what to ask for.

Bob and long bob

A bob is a straight-line cut at or above the chin. A long bob takes the same idea to shoulder or collarbone length. It is the most versatile cut there is: it lengthens the neck, frames the face and works on almost any texture. On fine hair, a blunt cut with no layers reads as more density. On very thick hair it needs internal thinning, or it becomes a triangle.

Pixie and short cuts

A pixie is short, with a compact nape and sides and height on top. It needs maintenance every four to six weeks because the shape is lost quickly — and above all it needs a face that gains from full exposure. It lengthens the neck, brings out cheekbones and eyes, and is the cut that most depends on a visagism reading before the scissors: once cut, there is no quick way back.

Layers, texture and shaggy

Layers remove weight and create movement; texturising works the ends to remove weight without shortening; shaggy combines short layers on top with length below and a fringe. Layers rescue heavy, movement-less hair — and harm fine hair, because they remove the very density that is already lacking. It is the most common mistake we see arriving in the chair.

Cuts for curly and coily hair

The rules change: hair that shrinks by 30–50% when dry cannot be shaped wet. Cutting dry, strand by strand or section by section, lets you see where each curl will land. Long layers create movement without lifting volume; layers that are too short create the pyramid effect. Cutting coily hair is above all about shape — not length.

The question that decides everything

Before choosing the name of a cut, answer this: how much time do you have in the morning? A cut that only exists after a blow-dry will frustrate you within three weeks. Every well-chosen cut has an “ordinary day” version that works with no effort.
